The pilates classes that we offer at Sowelu works on the body’s core stability. It incorporates a series of exercises that use the whole body to improve strength, flexibility and muscle tone. This class is for all levels. If you are a beginner then try the beginners pilates class or level one 6 week course will give some great fundimental knowledge as you learn. Pilates (pronounced Puh-lah-teez) was developed in the 1920's in Germany by Dr. Joseph Pilates. It incorporates breath, movement and exercises that focus on strengthening the "powerhouse" or core stabilizing muscles (abs and buttocks), and is designed to increase flexibility, strengthen muscles and improve posture, but not build bulk. Pilates can be performed on a specifically designed machine called the reformer or a floor mat. Many dancers and athletes use Pilates to improve performance and prevent injury, including lower back pain. The end result is a strong, supple body with a strong back. Who can do pilates?All ages and physical levels can do Pilates because it tones and strengthens the muscles without impacting the joints. It improves posture and strengthens the parts of the body that age attacks, including the stomach muscles, inner thighs and upper arms.
