Active birth

Active Birth yoga classes are gentle, safe and beneficial for you and your growing baby. You can attend these classes from 14 weeks onwards.

Mummy and me

is 1½ hr yoga for you and your baby. You practice strengthening postures and a gentle sequence for you and your baby.Yoga is a wonderful way of looking after yourself after the birth of your baby. These classes focus on postures specifically designed for the postnatal months, helping your body regain strength and tone in a safe and effective way. The emphasis is on strengthening the pelvic floor, the abdomen, legs and back as well as on opening and relaxing tensions in the shoulders, neck and arms.

Yoga relaxes the nervous system and brings balance to the endocrine system. It helps to create a balance between your body's physical needs and your emotional state.

The yoga taught in these classes is gentle and slow, giving you time to integrate the experiences of your body after birth. Within six months of regular practice you will find you have regained your core strength and energy.

How are the babies involved?

The classes include special activities to bond with your baby and connect with other mothers. During the sessions you will be offered the choice to involve your baby in the yoga postures or have him or her near to you. After yoga for you, there is time for baby yoga, singing and for the babies to socialise together. The classes are baby centred. When your baby is upset our policy is for you to attend to their needs either breastfeeding, changing, holding or generally reassuring them in your presence. With the support of others, you will be able to develop a balance between doing yoga for yourself and meeting the needs of your baby.

What are the benefits of Mummy and Me Yoga?

  • Increased ability to handle difficult and confronting situations with a reduction in anxiety and stress.
  • Increase in abdominal and pelvic floor stability thereby reducing back pain.
  • Confidence in reading and therefore responding appropriately to your child's developmental progress.
  • Overall enhanced well being and emotional stability.
  • It's a time to have fun with your baby and make friends.

When can I start and how long can I continue?

You can begin to practise gentle breathing exercises four weeks after your birth. Depending on your birth, we suggest 6 weeks after an unassisted vaginal birth and from 8 to 12 weeks for a caesarean delivery. It is very important that you attend when you feel physically capable. The classes are suitable for babies 6 weeks old to active crawling. If you have attended the Mummy and Me Yoga classes, you will be offered a place in the Mummy and Toddler Yoga classes when it is time to move on.

Mummy and Toddler class

What is Mummy and Toddler Yoga?

Mummy and Toddler Yoga is an extension of our Mummy and Me Yoga classes for active crawlers to two and a half years old and their mums. The yoga taught in these classes is more active than the postnatal classes but still a blend of yoga with your young one and for yourself.

After yoga for you, there is time for toddler yoga, singing and for the toddlers to socialise together. The classes are toddler-centred. When your toddler is upset our policy is for you to attend to their needs either breastfeeding, feeding, holding or generally reassuring them in your presence.
